Interested in a journalism career? Want to be published? You can be a correspondent for NeXt, the weekly The Buffalo News section written for students, by students.

Students who are selected to be correspondents work with a professional editor to conceptualize, develop, report and write stories of interest to teens and have their finished product published in both the print and online editions of The Buffalo News and get paid for their work. This is great for a resume, and many NeXt correspondents go on to get paid summer internships at the News, and several have been hired to work full time.

Ms. Kelly (the journalism teacher) will help you come up with story ideas and how to pitch them.

The deadline is July 3.

Selected applicants will be notified in early August.

Applicants should be high school students in the 2017-18 school year. Rising eighth graders are welcome to apply.

Interested applicants should prepare the following:

  1. A cover letter including their name, address, email, phone number, school and grade level that also explains his or her interest in journalism and writing.
  2. A description of the types of stories you are interested in writing, and include three specific story ideas.
  3. A writing sample. Samples should reflect some understanding of journalism techniques, but if students do not have samples from the school paper, an academic essay is acceptable. Short fictional pieces, poems and personal essays are not acceptable.
