The Week That Was – January 30, 2017 Edition

And the week to come.

This week the journalism students take us north, east, and south. Morgan Baker finds out how Lunar/Chinese New Year is observed at SEM; Christina Siragusa takes us north to Quebec City over the past MLK Weekend; Abby Collins reports on the Buffalo Women’s March and Emily Marie looks closely (south) downstairs at the Margaret Smith Mugel ’38 Atrium. Grace Gallagher covers our bowling team’s hopes; Isabelle Schlehr breaks down the game of squash and how SEM plays it getting us ready for city finals versus Nichols at Nichols on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 5:30 PM! And, SEM leaves for US Nationals on Thursday, February 9 – where we return as the two-time champions of Division V. Tessa Pszonak has a Summer at SEM update, Brook Sillart has a a reaction story complete with an interesting comparison chart to other local schools’ dress codes. Finally, Lauren Pollina has taken on the formidable task of profiling Mr. Gary Sutton.

SEM mock trial for the defense won vs. Grand Island at the Buffalo City Court in the NYSBA mock trial competition that began on Saturday, January 28. Team member seniors Morgan Baker, Sara Caywood, Clare von Simson, Caroline Dunbar, Maddy Leary, Dabin Han, Katie McClenahan and Lara Sherris were exhilarated.

Wilkinson Poet

Sherry Robbins is the 2017 Buffalo Seminary Wilkinson Poet. She will give a reading in the chapel on Wednesday, March 15, from 2:30-3:15 PM. Ms. Robbins will spend the day in classes with the students but all are invited, and welcome to the reading.

Our seven new French residential students were welcomed with a brunch at senior Sara Caywood’s house.

Mother/Daughter Brunch is March 5 at the Twentieth Century Club. Invitations are in the mail. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit this historic women’s club founded by SEM alumnae. Please RSVP by February 23.

Legacy Residential Scholarship

Do you know a girl who would be a great SEM girl? A great Hornet or Jacket? She doesn’t have to be from Buffalo anymore… Because whether she’s from around the block or around the world – Buffalo Seminary has a place for her in our 5- or 7-day boarding in the beautiful historic homes next door to the school. Scholarships are now available for residential girls referred by a graduate, trustee of the school, or SEM family for the 2017-18 school year. The purpose of this scholarship is to build our SEM community with talented young women who have a connection to the school.

Thank you to Emily Marie Jimenez ’17 for making the world a better place for all of us. She was honored as a community student leader by the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York at its annual luncheon on January 25.
