The Week That Was – February 20, 2017 Edition

And the week to come…

Black History Month Hero Harriet Tubman as imagined by Emily Marie Jimenez ’17.

Sra. Slingerland took her AP Spanish class to Los Ranchos a Venezuelan restaurant on Niagara Street on Thursday. “We enjoyed delicious food and we had a great conversation with the owners Henry and Flor,” she said. “We can’t wait to go back.”

In our arts coverage: don’t miss Emily Marie Jimenez’s illustration to honor Harriet Tubman, Emma Brentjens’ talk with two SEM violinists about the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra or Tessa Pszonak’s interview with Tara Porter and Angela Shi about making the All-County Orchestra.

Also in the SEM Weekly: Abby Collins covers our celebrations on Friday’s Open Day including a truly unique experience of our entire school going to the movies for a private viewing of Hidden Figures. Christina Siragusa describes the GSA’s stay positive Post-It campaign; Isabelle Schlehr has a senior game reflection from bowling; Brook Sillart gives us reasons not to miss the Mother/Daughter Brunch. In updates: Hornet/Jacket Board Chair Grace Gallagher has a standings update and mock trial lawyer Clare von Simson has winning status of the club. And finally, Morgan Baker begins a two-part inquiry into the sleep ways of SEM students and faculty.

Wednesday at 5 PM is the deadline for the UB poetry contest. $50 and pride are the prizes!

Legacy Residential Scholarship

Do you know a girl who would be a great SEM girl? A great Hornet or Jacket? She doesn’t have to be from Buffalo anymore… Because whether she’s from around the block or around the world – Buffalo Seminary has a place for her in our 5- or 7-day boarding in the beautiful historic homes next door to the school. Scholarships are now available for residential girls referred by a graduate, trustee of the school, or SEM family for the 2017-18 school year. The purpose of this scholarship is to build our SEM community with talented young women who have a connection to the school.

To nominate a candidate, contact Director of Admission Laura Munson ‘79 at 716.885.6780 or email [email protected].
