The Week That Was – Dec. 12 Edition

And the week to come: December 13-19, 2016

Dec. 12. Do you know what a Hawk Circle is? If you're a SEM student you do. Mrs. Hopkins and the entire school demonstrated in morning meeting today.

Erin Kelly, Managing Editor

The new trimester brought a new class of journalism students – nine seniors and two juniors, day students and residential. They bring a variety of perspective and experience that I look forward to gathering and editing. This week Team 1: Morgan Baker, Emma Brentjens, Abby Collins, Lauren Pollina, Isabelle Schlehr and Brook Sillart have contributed stories about everything from the adventures of the Semachords to a visit to unyts.

Aerin Wagner (who was in last trimester’s journalism class) wrote about dress code which was ratified by the School Government Association on Wednesday.

On Friday we said good-bye to our five sophomore German students who have been living and learning at SEM since late August. Melana Weber changed SEM history while she was here – scoring the winning goal for SEM’s soccer team to clinch the Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association championship for the first time since 2004.

Today was the annual Busche de Noel contest (the accents are missing, just imagine them over the u in Busche and the e in Noel). Here’s what’s left. Winners not disclosed at press time.

Years in the planning, Capstone launched for the junior class.

Yule Ball co-organizers seniors Aerin Wagner and Alex Kane are pleased with its success after a glum prognosis mid-week. “A lot more people than the nine that were signed-up on Wednesday came,” said Aerin. She said it raised over $1500 toward prom costs. The pews were removed and a dance was held in the chapel for the first time since… 1992? That date is crowdsourced from SEM’s alumnae Facebook page.

Do you know a potential SEM girl? Let her know! Our last Entrance & Scholarship Exam is December 17 at 9 AM.

The Community Service Board is holding a canned food collection for Mission Possible, a hunger abatement program of the City Mission. The SEM drive closes on Friday, December 16. Students are also encouraged to sign up to do a Meals on Wheels drop-off.

Please join us for the Revel concert on December 21 at 2:15 PM.  Parents and friends invited. There’s an alumnae gathering in Colby afterward.

Seminaria is selling ads, tribute pages and congratulatory lines until January 13. Click here to purchase them.

How do you know if it’s a Snow Day? In case we need to close the school due to heavy snow fall or harsh weather conditions, families and faculty receive a robocall quite early that morning (usually around 6 AM). The name of the school will also appear on the TV news and on radio, along with the other closings to confirm the school is closed. When school reopens it will be on the first day letter day that was missed – we don’t skip any letter days. i.e. If the closed day should have been a B day, then we go back on a B day.
