Hornet/Jacket Day commences in the Chapel.

Who doesn’t know it was Hornet/Jacket Day on Friday? New students and new faculty were all sorted and then they all ran the shaving cream gauntlet and played games like Tug-Of-War to start accumulating points toward winning the Hornet/Jacket Cup. The dances were great – the “neutrals” will have a hard time picking winners.

The students of the journalism elective will cover it more fully next week but there are pictures on Instagram and Facebook. In the meantime, gaze at the amazing picture Tessa Pszonak ’17 took of the festivities in the Chapel.

This week’s new stories include Elissa Yi on our day of Civil Discourse; LucyMarie Gaulin’s gathered advice for freshmen; Brooke Gannon takes us through a crew race at Welland; Becca Thomas takes us to the Buffalo Niagara Public Library for a talk by science writer Dava Sobel; Chris Wu interviews Profe. Paula Acosta on where she went to high school; Jenna Al-Naji does a fine job of reporting as she finds the upside to a swim team loss. There are lots more stories, please keep reading and delving into the site.

The week also had a visitor from Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper to ready the freshmen for their class canoe trip on the Buffalo River. (All the class trips are on Friday.)

Susan Drozd announced the fall production with a touching homage to beloved SEM drama instructor Toni Smith Wilson, whose memorial service was held at SEM on Saturday.

Plans are afoot for Grandparent Morning on November 22. Please use the link to send us contact information so we can send invitations.

SEM?Quest is November 4. It’s the only parent fundraiser party of the year. It’s fun, it’s casual, it’s SEM and Buffalo themed. There’s a silent auction, games, food and drinks all for $50 a ticket.

At Convocation on Wednesday, Helen L. Marlette will be officially installed as Head of School.
