Violinists Tara Porter  and Dabin Han and oboist Angela Shi are on their way to the Erie County Senior High Orchestra March 25-26 at the University at Buffalo. The Senior High Orchestra is a program that only the top high school musicians of Erie County get into. Before the girls were welcomed into that orchestra they had to go through an audition process.

The Erie County Music Educators’ Association (ECMEA) auditions took place at the Buffalo Performing Arts Center.  auditioned on a cold frigid day on January 14. Each musician had to arrange a solo for the 10-minute audition and prepare to sight read an exerpt picked by the judge, who also selects scales.”I was nervous before the audition because it was very early in the morning and I was not feeling well the past couple days leading up to it,” said Angela.

The auditions went well for the three SEM seniors with Dabin and Tara who scored a 100 and Angela who scored a 98. Two weeks after the auditions took place Tara, Dabin, and Angela found out they were accepted into the Senior High Orchestra which is part of a two-day festival with some of the best high school musicians in Erie County. The orchestra rehearses together for just one day. On the second day, they perform. “I am excited to play high quality music with very talented high school musicians,” said Tara.

SEM’s music director Ron Martin was very proud of his three students. He said he believes they deserve honors like this. “They work very hard and are excellent players. Dabin, Angela and Tara represent a sense of pride for the whole school to have,” he said.
