In a game that some watched peeking through their hands – SEM soccer won its semi-final match against St. Mary’s of Lancaster on the cold turf at Nichols School yesterday, Oct. 22.
The score is hard to describe. It was tied 1-1 at the end of the game. After two 10-minute overtime periods it remained unchanged. The next stage to decide a play off game is a shoot out.
Each team’s coaches select five players to alternate with the other team’s players to get one kick at the other team’s goal keeper. SEM and St. Mary’s tied in the first round of five kicks – both missing three times.
Then the next five girls arrived at the center of the field for their round goal tries – this time it was sudden death. By that time a huge crowd was gathered of onlookers for the next games waiting to start between Nichols, Sacred Heart, Niagara Catholic and Cardinal O’Hara.
SEM scored. Then St. Mary’s scored. Then SEM scored. Grace Cloherty did not allow St. Mary’s to score next and the nail-biter of a game was over. Fans wrapped in blankets on the grey day mobbed the field.
SEM will play Cardinal O’Hara next Sunday, October 30 at 10 AM at Niagara University.
