Congratulations to SEM’s cross country team for an amazing start to the season. On September 10, the team competed in the West Seneca invitational at Ellicott Creek Park and despite the high heat and humidity all runners did their best and finished strong.

Let’s start with xc-west-seneca-invitational-2016-brighterthe Freshman/Sophomore Race: CONGRATULATIONS to Zoe Knauss ’19 on winning (and defending her title from 2015) against 36 different large and small schools. Zoe set the pace throughout and finished strong winning by nearly 1 minute over her nearest competitor. Alyssa Anderson ’20, in her very first race, ran the 3rd fastest time on the team…Excellent! Maggie McCullough ’20 in her very first race, ran strong throughout, followed by Mary Leslie ’19 with another strong effort, and Georgia Bontempo ’20 in her very first race, crossed the finish line with a big kick.

Next up was the Varsity B (Junior/Senior) Race: With the temperature getting hotter (80 degrees by this time), Iliana Lukasik ’17 in her very first race, worked hard and stayed strong throughout, to finish with a very respectable time. Tessa Covello ’18 pushed through to run a nice early season time, Amanda Lee ’17 was in fine early season form as well taking home a top finisher award, and Julianna Scaccia ’18, in her very first cross country race, took home a top finisher award and looked strong throughout.

Finally, the Varsity A – Small Schools Race: Sam Burlow ’17 had been waiting patiently for four hours for her race to start and the heat index was well into the 90’s. Sam ran a smart race finishing right in the mix with the other Monsignor Martin competitors in the race, and taking home a top finisher award. Well done!

Sophomore Zoe Knauss ’19 defended her title as the winner of the 2015 West Seneca invitational despite the heat, humidity and fear Zoe even beat her own time from last year. “I was happy and relieved when I finished because I knew no one had beaten me.”

Team captains Sam, Amanda, and Iliana are all looking forward to a successful fall season as this will be their last on the Buffalo Seminary cross country team. The captains hope that everyone will improve their personal times and give it their all. The cross country team’s next meet is on September 20, versus Christian Central Academy at Ellicott Creek Park at 5:30 PM. Congratulations girls and good luck on the up coming season!
