This spring, SEM took to sailing and crew like… A duck to water.

The SEM sailing team traveled to Hampton, Virginia on May 4 to compete in the MidAtlantic Scholastic Sailing Association (MASSA) Girls Fleet Double Handed Championship while the Crew team traveled to Saratoga Springs, NY to race in the NYS Scholastic finals on May 11. Both teams hit the waters to represent SEM… and in some circumstances, other teams too.

The sailing team in Hampton, Virginia.

While in Virginia, the sailing team had shifty weather the first day but that didn’t hold them back. As the weather progressed, so did the number of races they sailed in. By the end of the weekend, the team sailed in a total of 17 races.  Grace Cannon ’19 and Syd Adams’ ’18 boat placed 6th and Molly Doyle ’18 and Maddy Love’s ’19 boat placed 7th. While those four girls were sailing for SEM, Julia Beck ’20 jumped in a boat for another team! A skipper from a Maryland team got a concussion while racing, so Julia came to the rescue and filled in for the hospitalized skipper. “We did a really great job because the rest of the people we were sailing against sail fill year and they’re all part of boarding schools who go down to Florida to sail during the winter months and sail continuously whereas we’ve only been sailing for about a month,” said Syd. Julia was made Athlete of the Week at SEM.

Crew in Saratoga, NY.

The SEM Crew team left for Saratoga the morning of May 11 for the NYS High School Championships. For some members of the crew team, it was their first time to Saratoga while for others it’s their last. “It definitely made the seniors pull harder and it was a strange feeling knowing it was our last major regatta,” said senior Katie Kraft.

Two boats placed in this regatta and one of those two boats broke a drought for the crew team. The JV 4+ consisting of Rae Griffin ’20, Emma Hammel ’20, Anya Casey ’19, Isabelle Finkbeiner ’19 and Jess Napier ’20 placed 3d in the scholastic finals. Not only did they place but they also qualified for nationals in Camden, New Jersey for the first time in 10 years. The JV 4+ will be heading to New Jersey this week to compete in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championship Regatta. As for the Freshman 4 consisting of Clara Murphy ’21, Sophie Bates ’21, Katie Pohlman ’21, Morgan Ball ’21, and Molly Shultz ’21, they made finals and placed 6th. “It’s strange knowing we would never go back to Saratoga in the same way,” said Katie.

This past weekend, the crew team had a doubleheader in attending the Mercyhurst Prep Invitational in Erie, Pa and the South Niagara Invitational in Welland, Ontario.  The team had particular success at Mercyhurst as the Novice A 4+ came in 1st and the JV 4+ placed 2nd.

Whether in a sailboat or a boat with oars, SEM girls can do anything on the water. “I’m really proud of the team and how we all worked together to have a successful weekend,” said Sophie.
