Starbucks and Ashker’s are good five-minute walk places for residential students to kickback over the weekends. But they are not the only two options.

The residential program held a variety of faculty-led weekend activities to the students this past winter. Students got off the campus and could socialize with their friends in nature, during a lab, or at an indoor climbing.

On January 20, Nurse Nancy and Mrs. Bernecki and 17 residential students headed to a snowshoeing journey at Beaver Meadow Audubon in Java Center, NY. A majority of the participants had never attempted the large, flat shoes that allowed them to “float” atop the snow before.

While trying out the new way of walking through the woods, it was also a special day for Veronica Zhang’ 19.”What a unique birthday present to hear my friends singing the happy birthday song to me and get snowball attacks afterward,” joked Veronica, “I liked this outdoor celebration though.”

In the physics lab, Ms. Basile and a group of students also explored to use wax to preserve white with watercolor in the early February. Nancy Wei’ 20 captured one of the most popular memes in China.

“I wasn’t aware of what I designed on my paper with wax until putting color on it. It wasn’t just for fun. Now the white in watercolor wasn’t a mystery to me anymore,” said Nancy Wei.

Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins provided a memorable indoor rock-climbing experience along with 10 girls on February 24 at the Niagara Rock Climbing Center. Many of the students described a sense of achievement when they conquered to the top of a wall and looked down to the ground.

As a second-time challenger here, senior Christina Cai was thrilled when she reached the top of a difficult wall she didn’t get to the last time.

The school hopes these off-campus activities can help the residential students relieve their stress over the weekends instead of grinding away at their homework all day long.

“It’s good for the girls to get out of their comfort zone and experience new things. Connecting with each other outside of the classroom is important for our community, and our weekend program promotes this,” said Mrs. Stothart, Assistant Head for Community Life.
