Monday, August 7, Red Key students, faculty members, and fall sports coaches welcomed the Class of 2021 and their families at the annual Freshman BBQ at SEM. In prior years the event has been held at Larkin Field, but threatening rain moved the gathering to the school building.

Red Key and faculty mingled in the front hall and gallery until Head of School Helen Marlette brought them to the chapel where she encouraged the new students to find and follow their passions by trying new things and being involved in the close-knit SEM community.

Ms. Munson took the mic and introduced faculty and staff: Assistant Head of School Natalie Stothart, Dean of Students Dr. Sara Sieczkarski, Advancement Associate Melanie Jaskolka, Freshman Dean Samantha Basile, Director of Communications Erin Kelly, and Dr. Wendy Sievenpiper (mother of Mackenzie Beck ‘18 and Julia Beck ‘20), the president of the SEM Parent Association. Liza Marlette ‘13 made an appearance and briefly described her experience at SEM and how she felt it set her on her path to college and the public relations career she is beginning in New York City. Eva introduced the fall sports coaches and highlighted the achievements of SEM’s sports teams last year.

There was a bbq style dinner in the atrium where the members of the Class of 2021 were able to express their personalities and mingle with each other, as well as coaches and Red Key students, while parents and teachers chatted.

Finally, Eva and Kacie led everyone to the new Magavern-Sutton Courtyard, where students played team-building games meant to help create new friendships. The last game of the night was a rousing couple of rounds of Simon Says led by Mrs. Marlette.

The Class of 2021 seemed to really enjoy each other in the courtyard. I’m looking forward to seeing the whole class united on the first day of school, with residential girls and students who couldn’t be there that night,” said Ms. Kelly, indicating that this was a great start to the new school year.
