The first August Wilson Monologue Competition in Buffalo was held on February 3.  Journey Hairston ’20 competed on behalf of SEM in a field of 10 schools. Journey’s monologue, from Mr. Wilson’s play “Jitney” received a standing ovation at morning meeting on Friday. While SEM students and teachers turned out to support Journey on Saturday, they were expected to remain in their seats!

Buffalo is one of only 12 cities in the U.S. that holds this competition Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Greensboro, Dallas, Los Angeles, New Haven, New York, Pittsburgh, Portland and Seattle are the others. The winners of the regional competitions in those cities meet in New York City in May for the nationals.

The Buffalo competition was held at Shea’s 710 Main Theater and is sponsored by the Paul Robeson Theater – its artistic director, Paulette D. Harris, is the Buffalo regional competition coordinator.
