Cum Laude Society Inducts Six Seniors

The Buffalo Seminary chapter of the Cum Laude Society inducted six seniors at morning meeting this morning: Madeleine Cherr, Zhiting Dong, Zoe Galarneau, Katie Gibbons, Margaret McHale and Elisa Yi. Melanie Franco Nussdorf ’67, a senior partner at Steptoe & Johnson LLP in Washington, DC, and who is a member of the SEM Cum Laude Society, welcomed the students.

Describing the future as fluid, not fixed, Ms. Nussdorf said, “Ladies, get out your hammers.” In a speech that told students it was right to be proud and advised dreaming big, she also addressed the current national conversation around sexual harassment. Ms. Nussdorf, who has had a long career as an attorney, cautioned: “Do not let someone with apparent power humiliate you.”

The Cum Laude Society is a national organization of over 300 chapters in both public and independent schools. Cum Laude membership is based solely on academic achievement and only 20% of seniors may be admitted. Class Day, June 11, 2018, a second group of seniors with high academic achievement will also be honored by induction into the Cum Laude Society.

Melanie Franco Nussdorf, Dr. Sara Sieczkarski, Zhiting Dong, Elisa Yi, Katie Gibbons, Zoe Galarneau, Madeleine Cherr, Margaret McHale, and Head of School Helen L. Marlette gathered in the Colby Room for a celebratory breakfast after morning meeting.
