OK, this team is really good and getting better each race! On Saturday, October 6, in a race with both large and small schools combined, our SEM girls came home 5th out of 14 teams. For the 4th time this season we faced St. Mary Lancaster either head to head or in an invitational meet, each time coming up just short. For the first time this season (or in school history) we beat St. Mary Lancaster…and by 14 places. Way to go girls!

With the temperature in the 70’s, nearly 100% humidity, and a drenched and muddy course, leading our team was Zoë Knauss running 19:34 and taking home a top finisher award. Finishing 2nd for SEM was Ana McNamara in 22:21 and taking home a top finisher award. Finishing 3rd for SEM was Angelina Myles in 22:46 and taking home a top finisher award. Finishing 4th for SEM was Grace McHale in 24:02. Finishing 5th for SEM was Tia Browder in 24:47. Finishing 6th for SEM was Essence Julien in 27:01, Finishing 7th for SEM was Caroline Finkbeiner in 28:09, Finishing 8th for SEM was Peyton Wagner in 28: 37. Finishing 9th for SEM was Lucy Chen in 30:04, 10th for SEM was Joy Byaombe in 32:42 and rounding out the SEM scoring was Adiyah Colin in 34:29.

We are still in the speed and endurance building phase of our training. We will reach our peak fitness level in about 3 weeks. For those that show up for practice (and for the meets) every day, and do the work, you will continue to get stronger, faster, and be in the best physical condition you have ever been in. We will compete against these teams again in the League Championship on Sunday, November 4 at Knox Farm State Park.

Overall race winner, and staying undefeated in League competition at 4-0 is Zoë Knauss. Congratulations Zoë! Next in for SEM and 6th overall was Ana McNamara, followed by Angelina Myles 8th overall, Grace McHale 11th overall, and rounding out the varsity scoring was Tia Browder in 15th overall. Next were Lydia Abbott, Jocelyn Yang, Maggie McCulloch, Maia Dreishpoon,  Caroline Finkbeiner, Peyton Wagner, Mary Curtain, Joy Byaombe, and Lucy Chen. Working hard again and improving on her 2-mile time was Adiyah Colin.

Check out the photo of Lucy Chen in the Olean Times Herald racing the athlete from Cuba Rushford HS all the way to the finish line for every spot which we know means every point. Every SEM girl in this race had the fitness and the determination to be best they could be, each taking spots and points on the race course…Wow!!!
