Submit now to the UB English Department second annual poetry contest!

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Writers, pick up your pens, and write your way to $50!

The UB English Department and Poetics Program has announced its second annual Buffalo High School Poetry Contest, which is available to any students of high school age, who currently attend a school in Buffalo.  Each student is eligible to submit only one entry of up to three pages, which can contain one single poem or a collection.

Finalists will be notified on March 22, 2017 and publicly announced at the Robert Creeley Lecture and Celebration of Poetry on March 30, 2017.  The three finalists will be invited to read their poems at the event, which honors Robert Creeley, a Black Mountain poet, UB professor and former SEM parent (one of our crew shells is named for him).  The finalists will receive gift certificates from Talking Leaves and the winner will receive $50.

The deadline to submit is Wednesday, February 22, 2017, 5:00 PM.  You can email your poem(s) as a Word document to [email protected] with a subject of “UB English/Poetics riverrun Poetry Contest”.  Do not put your name anywhere on the entry.

Include a cover page, separate from your entry, with the following information:

  • your name
  • address
  • telephone number
  • email
  • school
  • age

Each student is eligible to submit only one entry of up to three pages, which can contain one single poem or a collection.  Make sure to have your entry single-spaced with a 12-point font.
