Celebrating Black History Month at SEM allows us to pause, remember and reflect. We engaged with black history on a daily basis while looking forward to the future with the hope of unity and harmony among people of all races.

  • Friday, February 9 – Opening Day
    • Introduce the history of Black History Month and invite students to share what Black History Month means to them
  • Morning Meetings – Student Sharing
    • Share facts about Black History Month figures who had made the history
  • Tuesday, February 12 – Guest Speaker: Addison Henderson
    • Invite actor, director and writer Addison Henderson to come and talk about his documentary The Forgotten City that explores race relations, segregation and crime in the city of Buffalo, NY
  • Friday, February 22 – African Dance Performance
    • Present African Dance Showcase from SEM students and City Honors group to honor the ancestors of the African Diaspora
  • Wednesday, February 27 – Angela Davis Talk at UB
    • See activist and scholar Angela Davis talking on Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy of racial and social justice at University at Buffalo
  • Thursday, February 28 – Closing Day: Blackout Day
    • Wear Black to honor the losses and triumphs in the black community

 

Catherine Asiedu’20, Dorcas Bwenge’21, Journey Hairston’20 and Ania Wright’20 from SEM and seven students from City Honors High School presented an African Dance Showcase to honor the ancestors of the African Diaspora during the morning meeting on February 22.
