Giving week is on! From December 11 to 15, the community service board has collection boxes set up in the gallery: one for winter clothing for Jericho Road Community Health Center, one for school uniforms for St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy and one for feminine hygiene products for Undercover Life. The annual giving tree for the Family Help Center has also returned.

The giving tree is now set up in the gallery; consider picking up a tag!

Many of these drives have appeared at SEM during giving weeks in the past and winter clothing drives have been an important component of giving week for a long time. In previous years, SEM donated the coats, hats and mittens to Lafayette High School; this year, the donations are going to Jericho Road Community Health Center.

Students at SEM during the 2015-2016 school year will probably remember the feminine products drive similar to Undercover Life – the #ThatTimeoftheMonth drive. Sophomore Julia Beck brought Undercover Life to the community service board’s attention. “I think that as an all-girls school, we can all appreciate the desperate need for period products, something so basic that it’s unfathomable to imagine going without.”

The community service board wanted to make sure that they encouraged a giving spirit while still staying true to the idea of service learning— the idea that community service should educate a person about the struggles of others and encourage them to develop compassion.

Kyle Hopkins, the faculty advisor of the board, said that service learning is an integral part of giving week because “it forces us to put ourselves in other people’s shoes.” She continued, “it opens your perspective by thinking of other people.”

Whether this is your first giving week or your last giving week, the community service board encourages you to donate. As Mrs. Hopkins said, “donations are an easy way to make a difference in your community—and they do!”
